Overview and Origins

The Royal Ark Mariner Degree is a distinctive and compact Masonic order that draws its inspiration from the biblical story of Noah and the Ark. Its central theme is one of cleansing, renewal, and the triumph of virtue. In the narrative, Noah and his family represent the industrious and righteous who are preserved through the flood to rebuild and prosper.

The exact origins of the degree are uncertain. The earliest authenticated record of it being worked in England dates to 1790. For many years, the degree was worked within Craft and Mark lodges before being formally placed under the authority of the Mark Grand Lodge in 1871.

Symbolism and Connections to Craft Masonry

Admission to the order is known as elevation, a ceremony that has strong symbolic links to Craft Masonry. The legend of Noah and the First Covenant was part of early Masonic ritual, and early masons were sometimes referred to as Noachites.

This connection survives in modern Craft lodges in the form of the doves seen atop the Deacons’ wands—symbols that also appear in Royal Ark Mariner tradition, reflecting the dove that returned to the Ark with an olive branch as a sign of hope and renewal.

Ceremonies

There are two key ceremonies in the Royal Ark Mariner:

  • Elevation – The initiation of a new member into the Order, centred on the story of Noah, the Ark, and the covenant with God.
  • Installation – The ceremony in which the Commander Elect is installed into the Chair of a Royal Ark Mariner Lodge.

Both ceremonies are rich in symbolism, reinforcing the order’s themes of faith, perseverance, and moral strength.

Organisation and Structure

The Royal Ark Mariner Degree is governed by the Grand Masters Royal Ark Council under the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons. Every Royal Ark Mariner lodge is attached to a Mark Master Masons lodge and carries the same lodge number.

Forest Lodge Royal Ark Mariner works alongside its parent Mark Lodge, sharing the same fraternal bonds and traditions while maintaining the unique character of the Royal Ark Mariner degree.

Legacy and Purpose

The Royal Ark Mariner offers Masons a focused exploration of one of the most enduring biblical legends. For members of Forest Lodge RAM, it provides a deep sense of connection to both the history of Freemasonry and the timeless values of faith, virtue, and renewal. It remains an important part of the wider Masonic family, offering a degree that is concise in form but rich in meaning.
